Indoor air-handler problems can affect airflow, cooling, heating and condensate management.

What to check

Power switch

A switch on or near the unit, often like a light switch. Make sure it is on.

Door panel

A loose access panel trips a safety switch and stops the unit.

Filter and pan

A clogged filter, or a full drain pan with a float switch, can shut it down.

Electrical components inside

Do not remove panels beyond the filter door. The air handler has high-voltage wiring and, with heat strips, very hot elements.

Common air handler failures

Control board

No response to the thermostat.

Float switch tripped

Full drain pan shuts the system off.

Heat strips

No heat on electric or heat pump systems.

Air handler questions

What is an air handler?

The indoor unit with the blower and coil that pushes air through the ducts. It pairs with a heat pump or AC outside.

Can I call at night?

Yes. You can call 833-877-1717 at any time, including nights, weekends and holidays. Whether an independent provider can come out right away depends on your ZIP code, the time and provider capacity, so availability is not guaranteed.

Why does my air handler shut off?

Common causes are a full drain pan, overheating from a dirty filter, or a failing motor or control.

Do providers work on all brands?

Independent HVAC providers commonly work on major brands such as Carrier, Trane, Lennox, Rheem, Goodman, Bryant and York. Tell RepairNowUSA the brand on the call. RepairNowUSA is not affiliated with or authorized by any manufacturer, and warranty work may need the manufacturer’s own network.
