Loss of heat can become urgent when weather conditions or occupant needs make indoor temperatures unsafe.

Quick checks

Thermostat

Set to heat, a few degrees above room temperature. Replace batteries if the display is blank.

Power

Check the furnace or air-handler breaker and the service switch near the unit, which looks like a light switch. Reset a tripped breaker once.

Filter and vents

A clogged filter can make a furnace overheat and shut itself off. Replace it if dirty.

While you wait: close doors to unused rooms, use blankets and layers, and open cabinet doors under sinks on outside walls so pipes stay warmer.

Carbon monoxide and unsafe heating

Never use an oven, gas range, grill, camp stove or generator to heat indoors. They produce carbon monoxide, which can kill. Use only space heaters made for indoor use, keep them at least 3 feet from anything that can burn, and plug them straight into the wall. If a CO alarm sounds or you smell gas, get everyone outside and call 911.

Why heat stops

Heat pump blowing cold air

Stuck in defrost, low refrigerant or a reversing valve problem. See heat pump not heating.

Blower runs, no heat

Burners not lighting or a safety switch has tripped.

Thermostat or control failure

A blank or unresponsive thermostat. See thermostat repair.

No heat questions

Is no heat an emergency?

It is urgent in freezing weather, when infants, older adults or medically vulnerable people are inside, or when pipes could freeze. If anyone is unsafe from the cold, go to a warm place or call 911.

Is it safe to heat the house with the oven or a grill?

No. Never use an oven, gas range, grill or generator to heat indoors. They can produce deadly carbon monoxide.

Can a house without heat cause frozen pipes?

Yes. In freezing weather, pipes in exterior walls, crawl spaces and attics can freeze and burst. Opening cabinet doors and letting faucets drip slightly can help until heat is back.

Can I call for heating repair at night?

Yes. You can call 833-877-1717 at any time, including nights, weekends and holidays. Whether an independent provider can come out right away depends on your ZIP code, the time and provider capacity, so availability is not guaranteed.

Why did my heat stop working suddenly?

Common causes are a tripped breaker or switch, a clogged filter, a failed igniter or flame sensor, or a thermostat problem. A technician finds the cause.

Do providers work on all furnace and heat pump brands?

Independent HVAC providers commonly work on major brands such as Carrier, Trane, Lennox, Rheem, Goodman, Bryant and York. Tell RepairNowUSA the brand on the call. RepairNowUSA is not affiliated with or authorized by any manufacturer, and warranty work may need the manufacturer’s own network.
