Quick checks before you call

Thermostat

Set to cool, set point below the room temperature, fan on auto. Replace the batteries if the screen is blank.

Breakers and switch

Check the panel for a tripped AC or furnace/air-handler breaker and reset it once. Check the service switch near the indoor unit is on. If a breaker trips again, leave it off.

Air filter

A badly clogged filter can stop airflow and freeze the coil. Replace it if it is dirty.

Do not open the outdoor unit or touch wiring or refrigerant lines. The capacitor inside can hold a dangerous charge even with power off.

Heat is a health emergency

Heat illness can become life-threatening. Signs include heavy sweating or hot dry skin, confusion, dizziness, nausea and a fast pulse. Call 911 for anyone who is confused or unresponsive, and move vulnerable people to a cool place while waiting for the repair.

What the system is doing tells the technician a lot

Won’t turn on at all

Thermostat, power, a tripped safety switch, or a failed control board.

Outdoor unit humming but not running

Often a failed capacitor or contactor. See AC capacitor repair.

Running but blowing warm air

Airflow, a frozen coil, low refrigerant or an outdoor unit problem. See AC not cooling.

Loud grinding, screeching or banging

Turn it off. A failing fan motor, blower or compressor can get worse. See AC fan repair.

Emergency AC repair questions

Can I call for emergency AC repair at night or on a weekend?

Yes. You can call 833-877-1717 at any time, including nights, weekends and holidays. Whether an independent provider can come out right away depends on your ZIP code, the time and provider capacity, so availability is not guaranteed.

My AC will not turn on at all. What should I check first?

Thermostat setting and batteries, the AC and furnace or air-handler breakers, the service switch near the indoor unit, and the air filter. Reset a breaker once only.

My air conditioner is making a loud noise. Should I turn it off?

Yes. Grinding, screeching, banging or a loud buzz can mean a failing motor, fan or compressor part. Turn it off at the thermostat and describe the sound when you call.

When is a broken AC an emergency?

During high heat, and especially when infants, older adults, people with medical conditions or pets are inside, or a business needs cooling. If someone shows signs of heat illness, call 911 first.

Do providers work on Carrier, Trane, Lennox and other AC brands?

Independent HVAC providers commonly work on major brands such as Carrier, Trane, Lennox, Rheem, Goodman, Bryant and York. Tell RepairNowUSA the brand on the call. RepairNowUSA is not affiliated with or authorized by any manufacturer, and warranty work may need the manufacturer’s own network.

How much does emergency AC repair cost?

The independent provider sets the price, which varies by area, time and the repair. Ask for the visit fee and an estimate before approving work.
