Breaker keeps tripping or will not stay reset?

A breaker that trips repeatedly is doing its job: something on that circuit is drawing too much current or has a fault. Resetting it over and over can overheat wiring. Leave it off and call 833-877-1717. RepairNowUSA connects the request. An independent electrician finds the cause.

Am I in the right place?Yes for a breaker that trips again right after reset, trips when one appliance runs, or will not reset at all.
Is this urgent?Urgent with burning smells, a hot panel, buzzing or scorch marks. If you see smoke, flames, or sparks that do not stop, leave the building and call 911.
What do I do next?Unplug what was running on that circuit, reset once, and if it trips again leave it off and call 833-877-1717.

Panel buzzing or hot: electrical panel repair. Burning smell or sparks: emergency electrician.

Narrow it down safely

Unplug the circuit

Unplug everything on that circuit, then reset the breaker once. If it holds, plug things back in one at a time to find the trigger.

Overload or fault?

Tripping when a heater, microwave or hair dryer starts is usually overload. Tripping with nothing plugged in points to a wiring or device fault.

Stop after one try

If it trips immediately with nothing connected, leave it off.

Never bypass a breaker

Do not tape a breaker on, swap in a larger breaker, or keep resetting it. That removes the protection against wiring fires. Never touch electrical equipment while wet or standing in water, and do not open panels or devices that are hot, buzzing, smoking or sparking. If you see smoke, flames, or sparks that do not stop, leave the building and call 911.

Why breakers trip

Overloaded circuit

Too many high-draw devices on one circuit.

Ground fault

Moisture in an outlet or appliance. See GFCI repair.

What to have ready when you call

What happens when you call RepairNowUSA

  1. Describe what is happening in plain words and give the property ZIP code. You do not need to know which trade to ask for.
  2. RepairNowUSA checks for a participating independent provider who handles electrical repair in that area.
  3. If one is available, you are connected. The provider confirms timing, access, scope and price with you before any work.
  4. The provider, not RepairNowUSA, diagnoses and performs the repair.

RepairNowUSA is a referral and connection service. Provider availability and response times vary by location, time and demand, and are not guaranteed. Before you approve work, ask what was found, the price, the timing and what is not included.

Tripping breaker questions

Is it dangerous if a breaker keeps tripping?

The breaker is protecting the wiring. Repeated resetting is what becomes dangerous. Leave it off and have it checked.

Can I replace the breaker with a bigger one?

No. Breakers are sized for the wire. A bigger breaker can let wiring overheat.

Can I call at night?

Yes. You can call 833-877-1717 at any time, including nights, weekends and holidays. Whether an independent provider can come out right away depends on your ZIP code, the time and provider capacity, so availability is not guaranteed.

Why does my breaker trip in the rain?

Water getting into outdoor outlets, fixtures or wiring can cause ground faults.
