Repeated breaker trips are symptoms; the electrician determines whether the breaker, circuit, connected equipment or panel is responsible.

What to do

Do not force it

If a breaker trips again right away, leave it off. Holding a breaker on or taping it defeats the protection.

Unplug loads on that circuit

Unplug everything on the circuit, then try resetting once. If it still trips, the problem is in the wiring or the breaker.

Stay out of the panel

Do not remove the panel cover. If the panel is hot, buzzing, sparking or smells burned, stay away and call.

Panels are not DIY

Never touch electrical equipment while wet or standing in water, and do not open panels or devices that are hot, buzzing, smoking or sparking. If you see smoke, flames, or sparks that do not stop, leave the building and call 911.

Breaker problems

Breaker will not reset

A breaker that trips immediately points to a short circuit or ground fault, or a failed breaker.

Breaker trips under load

Tripping when the microwave, heater or AC runs usually means an overloaded circuit or a failing appliance.

Hot or buzzing breaker

Heat or buzzing at the panel can mean a loose connection or failing breaker. It is a fire risk.

AFCI or GFCI breaker tripping

These breakers trip on arcing or current leakage. Repeated trips often reveal a wiring or appliance problem. See wiring repair.

What to have ready when you call

How circuit breaker repair usually works

  1. Diagnose. The electrician tests the circuit for shorts, ground faults and overload.
  2. Inspect the panel. Connections, the bus and the breaker are checked for heat damage.
  3. Repair the cause. Faulty wiring or devices are fixed, or loads are moved to another circuit.
  4. Replace the breaker if needed. Failed breakers are replaced with ones listed for that panel.

Some older panel brands have known problems. If your panel is old or shows heat damage, ask the electrician whether it should be evaluated for replacement. See panel repair.

What happens when you call RepairNowUSA

  1. Describe what is happening in plain words and give the property ZIP code. You do not need to know which trade to ask for.
  2. RepairNowUSA checks for a participating independent provider who handles circuit breaker repair in that area.
  3. If one is available, you are connected. The provider confirms timing, access, scope and price with you before any work.
  4. The provider, not RepairNowUSA, diagnoses and performs the repair.

RepairNowUSA is a referral and connection service. Provider availability and response times vary by location, time and demand, and are not guaranteed. Before you approve work, ask what was found, the price, the timing and what is not included.

Circuit breaker questions

Why will my breaker not reset?

It usually means a short circuit, ground fault or a failed breaker. Do not keep forcing it.

Is a warm breaker normal?

A breaker carrying a heavy load can feel slightly warm. Hot, buzzing or discolored breakers need an electrician.

Why does my breaker trip when I run the microwave?

The circuit may be overloaded with other appliances, or the appliance or wiring may have a fault.

Can breakers wear out?

Yes. Breakers can weaken over time and trip too easily or fail to trip. An electrician can test them.

Can I call at night?

Yes. You can call 833-877-1717 at any time, including nights, weekends and holidays. Whether an independent provider can come out right away depends on your ZIP code, the time and provider capacity, so availability is not guaranteed.
