Quick checks

Check GFCI outlets

Look for a tripped GFCI in the bathroom, kitchen, garage or outside, and press reset. One GFCI can protect several outlets.

Check the breaker

Look for a breaker in the middle position. Turn it fully off, then on. If it trips again, leave it off.

Stop if it is warm or scorched

If the outlet is warm, buzzing or discolored, stop using it and turn off its breaker.

Heat at an outlet is a warning

Never touch electrical equipment while wet or standing in water, and do not open panels or devices that are hot, buzzing, smoking or sparking. If you see smoke, flames, or sparks that do not stop, leave the building and call 911.

Common outlet problems

Tripped GFCI elsewhere

Many dead outlets are downstream of a tripped GFCI in another room. See GFCI repair.

Loose connection

Outlets wired with push-in connections can loosen over time and stop working or heat up.

Worn outlet

Plugs that fall out or fit loosely mean worn contacts that can arc and overheat.

Scorched or melted outlet

Discoloration, melting or a burning smell are fire warnings. Leave the circuit off.

What to have ready when you call

How outlet repair usually works

  1. Check the circuit. The electrician checks GFCIs, breakers and other outlets on the circuit.
  2. Open and inspect. With power off, the outlet and its connections are inspected.
  3. Repair or replace. Loose connections are remade and worn or damaged outlets are replaced.
  4. Upgrade if needed. GFCI or AFCI protection may be added where codes require it.

If one outlet failed from heat, nearby outlets on the same circuit should be checked too.

What happens when you call RepairNowUSA

  1. Describe what is happening in plain words and give the property ZIP code. You do not need to know which trade to ask for.
  2. RepairNowUSA checks for a participating independent provider who handles outlet repair in that area.
  3. If one is available, you are connected. The provider confirms timing, access, scope and price with you before any work.
  4. The provider, not RepairNowUSA, diagnoses and performs the repair.

RepairNowUSA is a referral and connection service. Provider availability and response times vary by location, time and demand, and are not guaranteed. Before you approve work, ask what was found, the price, the timing and what is not included.

Outlet questions

Why is my outlet dead but the breaker is fine?

Often a tripped GFCI elsewhere on the circuit, or a loose connection in this outlet or one before it.

Is a warm outlet dangerous?

Yes. Heat means a poor connection or overload. Stop using it, turn off the breaker and have it checked.

Why do plugs fall out of my outlet?

The contacts are worn. Worn outlets can arc and overheat and should be replaced.

Can I use an extension cord instead?

Only as a short-term fix with a properly rated cord. Do not run heaters or other heavy loads on extension cords.

Can I call at night?

Yes. You can call 833-877-1717 at any time, including nights, weekends and holidays. Whether an independent provider can come out right away depends on your ZIP code, the time and provider capacity, so availability is not guaranteed.
